Tea tree oil, also known as melaleuca oil is a very pale (almost clear) golden color essential oil. It is taken from the leaves of the Melaleuca 
alternifolia which is native to the northeast coast of New South Wales, Australia.
The term “tea tree oil” is somewhat misleading since Melaleuca alternifolia is a paperbark rather than a tea tree. Tea tree oil is not 
the same as tea oil, the sweet seasoning and cooking oil from pressed seeds of the tea plant Camellia sinensis an it should also not be confused with the tea oil plant Camellia oleifera.
The Aborigines of Australia introduced tea tree oil to the Cook expedition. They would place crushed leaves from the tree on a wound, infection or other skin problem and put a mud pack on top of it. To the surprise of the Cook expedition, the leaves helped heal the wound and the mud didn’t cause an infection.
During WWII, many soldiers in Australia had a severe fungus infection in their feet. It was bad enough to hospitalize many, and nothing was working. The doctor happened to be an Aborigine and remembered the oil. He obtained pure tea tree oil and put it on the fungus…which cleared up within days of beginning treatment. The doctors were so impressed, they included a small bottle of the oil in each soldier’s first aid kit.
Tea tree oil has continued to be a popular product, but not very many studies have been done on it. Those that have been done indicate that it may indeed by antimicrobial and antifungal. Topical application may also ease the pain of some minor muscle strains, sprains and bruises.
Like many products, there are side effects, precautions and interactions. Tea tree oil should never be ingested as it can cause severe reactions…including death. It’s best not to use it as a mouthwash or on sores inside the mouth, because of this possibility. Caution should be use on skin application as well. Small amounts are ok, but using it on large or in large amounts areas could cause difficulty walking, slowing of brain function and poor coordination.
People with eczema may have problems with tea tree oil, as it could make the condition worse. Very little is known about safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, it has been noted that it can decrease the force of contractions, so it should not be used during childbirth. If you want to apply it while breastfeeding, don’t put it on the breast so as to prevent the baby from absorbing it.
If you are using any acne treatment…either over the counter or prescription…tea tree oil could interact with it. Also, it can interact with topical and oral anti-inflammatory medications, antibiotics, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-cancer medications.
For minor ailments, this oil is wonderful. In small amounts it can help such problems as osteo-arthritis as well. It is a valuable asset to any first aid kit.

Since the early 1990s, research on the medicinal properties of the essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree oil) has been conducted by a group of scientists within the School of Biomedical, Biomolecular and Chemical Sciences at The University of Western Australia.
The group has shown that tea tree oil has broad-spectrum in vitro antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral activity. Laboratory studies are ongoing and some clinical work has also begun. These studies are critical if tea tree oil is to be accepted as a topical antimicrobial agent.
